Inspiration

In March, 2004, a very special person was in the prime of her life at age 27 when she began losing her balance, falling often, forgetting important events, having blurred vision, experiencing bipolar symptoms and overall deterioration of cognitive ability.  She was preparing to graduate from nursing school, completing her second degree (first was in Health Science Administration) and was shattered with the medical diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). It took over two years to overcome the shock, withdrawal, denial and acceptance of what was to become of her well-being. Having to transition from being very active, always jovial, and very independent to being bed ridden for several months and ultimately dependent upon family, friends, caregivers, and the medical profession was a drastic change.  She endured struggles from many episodes:  braces from falling and fracturing both ankles, boots to stabilize the movement of her ankles, various ankle surgeries, wheelchairs (manual & mobile), convalescence care, walkers, canes, crutches, medication (at least 14 pills a day, sometimes more), injections, infusions, home foreclosure, divorce, and four automobile accidents that by the grace of God’s angels she survived each one.

Not until 7 years later, 2011, did this special person realize she had to move forward. With a smile on her face, she began to realize that if she could make her experiences more meaningful to others it would be through a day care outlet for the young and middle age disabled who seem to fall through the cracks or get trapped in self pity when trying to better their lives, but because of their disabilities are left out of the mainstream of society.

This special person described above was Calaundra D. Hazzard, a daughter, mother, sister, aunt, friend, and the “H” in MBHM, Inc.  Calaundra passed on June 2, 2012 but her dream lives on. A facility that would encompass the atmosphere, service and professional staff of a caring, comprehensive, and efficient daily outlet for this population of the disabled would be a blessing for this entire community.  Through faith, passion, and determination MBHM will strive  to make a difference in the lives of the disabled.
